A Very Different Approach to Chamber Publishing
That's Worth Learning About
Let's Start With the Way We Were
The chamber non-dues publishing business model has remained largely unchanged for the last 30 years. Regardless of the vendor, with minor variations, it goes like this: A publisher offers to produce a street map, magazine, viewbook, profile or directory with a portion of the advertising revenues returned to the chamber. The project is introduced to your members with a letter, and the publisher begins calling potential advertisers to solicit sponsorship. Once the sales phase is completed, the publisher puts your publication together based on sales volume. As a rule, within four to seven months you get your printed publication. Some publishers will also offer to put the publication online and give you a link to post on your Web site. For consideration of your organization's position of influence in the community and endorsement of the project, most publishers will offer a 5 to 12 percent royalty upon delivery of the publication. The industry hasn't changed in a meaningful way since the Nixon administration until now.
